Steak is a delectable cut of meat that can be cooked in a number of ways. There are different cuts of steak which include: filet mignon, rib eye steak, chuck steak, cube steak, sirilion steak, T-bone steak, strip steak, round steak among others. The cut of steak will determine how long the steak will need to be cooked and the method used to cook it. Steak is a great complement to any meal and can be enjoyed in a variety of ways.
Steak can be prepared as said previously in quite a few ways. The length of time taken to prepare and cook the steak will largely depend on how you prefer to eat the steak. Specifically, if you prefer it to be rare, medium rare, medium, medium well done or well done.
Choosing your cut of steak
When choosing the cut of steak that will be used it is best to understand how the cut of the steak will affect cooking time and the best method you should use to cook it. For example filet mignon cooks fairly easily and is tender once cooked. Choosing a thinner or leaner cut of steak is also a great way to lessen the time it will take to cook the steak.
You may prepare the steak for cooking by following these simple steps
- Defrost the steak if it is frozen. Place it in a pan at room temperature and allow it to thaw slowly. You may also defrost it in a microwave if you wish to quicken the process.
- You should remove any excessive areas of fat from the steak.
- If you wish to cut the steak in smaller pieces cut it against the grain to preserve or improve tenderness.
- Once the steak has thawed you can marinate it to tenderize the meat. Allow it to stand with marinade for a few hours if necessary.
- Once it has marinated use choice seasoning for example salt, pepper, garlic, onion among others to season the meat. This will enhance the flavour of your steak.
Cooking the steak
The steak can be prepared by grilling, frying on the stove top or in the oven.
Frying the steak
- To fry the steak preheat the pot on a stove.
- Add some oil to the pot and allow the oil to become hot.
- Once the oil has reached the desired heat level. Add the pre-prepared steak.
- Brown it on one side and use an egg lifter or tongs to turn it. Do not use a fork as this will pierce the steak while it is cooking.
- Once it has been browned on both sides and cooked to the desired level (rare, medium rare, etc.) remove it from the fire and allow it to stand for 10 minutes before serving.

Grilling the Steak
- Preheat the grill.
- Once the grill is sufficiently heated place the cut of steak on the grill’s surface.
- Brown it on one side and then turn it to cook it on the other side.
- Once it has been satisfactorily cooked you may remove it from the grill and place it in a dish and allow to stand for ten minutes before serving.
Baking the steak
- Preheat the oven to 320 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Before baking the steak preheat a frying pan and than add the steak in the pan and sear it on both sides.
- Place the seared steak in a greased baking pan, cover and put it in the oven.
- Use a cooking thermometer to gauge how much the steak has cooked or test it with a fork. Ideally it should cook for at least three hours for best results.
- Once it is thoroughly cooked remove it from the oven and allow it to cool.
- When serving cut across the grain to promote tenderness.
